Food Budget Tips from Seattle DukeEngage Group:
1. "Buy things that are cheap and will fill you up."
2. "I buy things I like, but not obsessively like."
3. Don't go to a grocery store hungry.
4. Buy snacks in bulk.
5. Use crystal light packets instead of buying a drink for lunch.
6. Make coffee in the morning before going to work.
7. Buy brownie mix (if you really like eating dessert), rather than getting dessert out.
8. Share meals and group cooking.
9. Go to cheap restaurants.
10. If you like to go out, go out for lunch, and not for dinner (less expensive).
11. "Come back to Seattle once you have a job (then eat out)."
12. Save up for the dinners that you eat out.
13. Take leftovers home (make two meals out of food that you get out).
14. Compromise with group (different group members have different expectations for money- important for group cohesion).
15. Be frugal the first few weeks of the program, and spend money towards the end when you know you have saved enough.
16. Buy off-brand products.
17. Use coupons.
18. Make a list before you go to the store.
19. Get a membership card to grocery stores.
20. Buy frozen veggies and fruit rather than fresh produce.
21. Take tupperware with you to save leftovers from events with food.
22. Use your student ID card to get discounts at restaurants.
